Some of my favourite films contain major plot twists. The idea of not knowing what will happen, even after watching a trailer or reading a description, makes the viewing experience even more exciting. Everyone loves a good plot twist in a film, so today, I’m going to share four of my favourite choices. Of course, there are so many of these movies out there, but I think these five films are a great beginning to a journey into the plot twist world of cinema.
1. Fight Club (1999); Directed by: David Fincher
Fight Club is an amazing film that explores themes of identity and disillusionment. The unnamed narrator and one of the main characters (Edward Norton) form an underground fight club with his new friend, Tyler Durden (Brad Pitt) which ends up becoming unbelievably chaotic. Throughout the film, the narrator becomes more and more connected with Tyler and that just ends up creating more of a mess. The twist in this film will reshape the way you view the film and will stay with you, hopefully, for a very long time.
2. Shutter Island (2010); Directed by: Martin Scorsese
This film follows Marshal Teddy Daniels (Leonardo DiCaprio) who is investigating the disappearance of a patient from a psychiatric facility which is located on a remote island. As he delves deeper into the case he starts uncovering a sort of conspiracy that involves the staff and patients. This film’s plot twist will go down in history as one of the best; you will be at a complete loss for words!
3. Gone Girl (2014); Directed by: David Fincher
This very famous film, based on Gillian Flynn’s novel, Gone Girl follows Nick Dunne (Ben Affleck) as he searches for his missing wife, and becomes the prime suspect. His wife Amy (Rosamund Pike) disappeared one day and was nowhere to be found; the film follows Nick’s journey in battling whether he should look for his wife, or let her go for good. Once you get to the twist of this film, you will not be disappointed.
5. The Menu (2022); Directed by: Mark Mylod
The Menu is a dark film that follows a group of individuals who are dining at one of the most prestigious restaurants in the world, with one of the most well-known chefs. The evening starts with the presentation of a meticulously crafted dining experience which turns dark pretty quickly. The twist in this film is revealed early on but, everything after the twist just gets more and more suspenseful and horrific.
To conclude, there will always be more films with intense plot points and shocking twists but, these four are amazing ones to start with. I hope you watch some of these films and have your mind blown in the same way that I did. Try not to research these films any further, take my word for it, these films are some of the best and will stay with you for a long while after you finish them.
